ARGH! I just want to scream! Or jump off a roof, or in front of moving bus, but there's that daft thing in my head called a conscience that won't let me. I CAN NOT TAKE THE PAIN ANYMORE.
Tomorrow will be FIVE WEEKS of agony with this neck thing. And it's bad. I can handle "normal" pain, after all I've been through I definitely have a very high tolerance, G-d knows, but this is slowly driving me delirious.
I am sad to report that the shoulder cortisone injection and the trigger point injection did absolutely NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING. I emailed Dr. Panagos on Monday and didn't hear back, he's busy I get it but I'm being a selfish person for once and need help. Tuesday I rang his office, and his assistant said he was on the phone but would ring me back directly. Unfortunately he didn't get to until Wednesday am. He did leave a message apologising and I rang him back as soon as I received it. He asked me a bunch of questions and agreed that something needs to be done. I have no life, I get to work, by about 16.00 I'm dying in agony, then I go home directly after work and lay on the couch until bedtime, and in the middle drink wine and take klonopin hoping it will help me sleep. I still can't even lie flat on my back. Anyway I digress. Dr. P said he had put a call into Cornell for a consult as he wants me to have the spinal epidural in a hospital setting. I'm ok with waiting an extra day or two so it's done correctly but I need to know that it's going to be done soon. He said he'd ring me back and I told him I'd be in the office until 16.00 and then had a hand dr appointment and he could ring me on my mobile. Sadly I did not hear from him at all. I ended up sending him an email around 20.30 asking if he had "any news at all???". My mother laughed at that. Hey, I'm desperate. I did ring his office about 20 minutes ago and spoke to his assistant. She said he was doing a procedure and would get to him as soon as possible. I said even if he just has a message and she rings me back, I just need to know there is a light at the end of the tunnel because I'm in misery. I did apologise for being completely brain dead as all this pain has made my brain turn to mush, even more than normal!
On another note, I saw Dr. Melone yesterday. I've been putting off this appointment because last year he said if the cortisone injection didn't work I'd have to have surgery. After my trip to London though and only using my big camera for 3 days, then suffering for a week after, I had to sort something out. At least the surgery is much more minor that the last 4, and the recovery seems to be quicker. I will have a splint on but will be able to use my fingers and go back to work in a day or so. I need to find out how long it will take for my hand to be in "working order" as well as if I will need PT after. Both from a time and health insurance perspective, since they only give you a very limited number of PT visits TOTAL per year. That might work for regular people but not the special ones! I also can't schedule it till I have this back thing sorted out. I can't believe I have to have another hand surgery. It didn't really sink in until today.
Anyway that is where I am at the moment. At least I have a gorgeous new niece and brilliant nephew to divert me on occasion.
from diagnosis through surgery for FAI, labral tear, psoas release, as well as fibromyalgia and EDS (ehlers danlos / hypermobility syndrome) - and not lets forget the bad hands/wrists! Additional information regarding dealing with a peri-rectal abscess which then turned into a fistula. Currently I'm trying to sort out my neck and upper back as I have been diagnosed with stenosis, and herniated and bulging discs in my cervical spine.

And I was right again, unfortunately...
I didn't have a chance to write more after the last update because when I went to see the doctor he told me I had to have surgery again for yet another peri rectal abscess! He was in shock and couldn't suss it out, which made me feel even more worried. Two in one week is a bit bizarre. He asked if I had eaten when I was at his office and I said yes, so he said he could do it with local anesthetic. Anyone who has read my ER visit last year will know that there was NO WAY IN HELL that I would let anyone ever cut me without being unconscious again. I was quite happy to wait one more day with some pain than to have that happen again. So, that night my mother came in so she could go to the doctors with me. This time they had the demerol ready afterwards. Last time even though I told them I would need it they tried to fob me off with some percaset - which makes me puke my brains out.
I was out from work the day of surgery and the next day. I saw the doctor the day after and he was still perplexed, though happily this time he said that there was a lot of puss and not just blood. Of course I was told that I have to have a colonoscopy for sure, no getting out of this time. It's probably for the best as I've been so bloated the last few months and my insides are schizophrenic. The dr still doesn't think it's Crohn's, and I've done a bit of research myself. I suppose it could be but I don't think so. Not that I'm hoping for any one of these, but for all the symptoms I have I've narrowed it down to a few possibilities. Hopefully (touch wood) it's just IBS, and we shall find out in a few weeks when I have the colonoscopy.
The main problem was with timing as I was off to London on the 1st of May, just four days after the second surgery! I rang the airlines and asked if I could upgrade one way, and they kept saying nope, because you used miles for the ticket, but to ask at the airport. You'd think they'd be nicer to loyal customers! When I got to the airport I asked the check-in man, and he said he couldn't, but was at least nice enough to block the seat next to me. Only problem was that it was a bulkhead which was good, but not when you want to spread out as you can't lift the armrest. Oh well. When I got to the gate I asked again, and I have to say the woman working there was such a nasty cow! No sympathy let alone any assistance and such a bitch! I hope she has to have this surgery and then sit on her arse for 8 hours and see how she likes it! I normally wouldn't say that but she truly was an horrible person! So I get on the plane and ask one of the flight attendants if they could help me, and of course, she checks w/ her head person and no result. At this point I'm getting beyond desperate. I try to get myself sorted in the seat and have my legs over the arm rest onto the other seat, but of course I'm leaning on my right hip at this point and well, that hip was not happy even w/ the lido patch on it. After we took off I couldn't sit anymore so I made a little spot on the floor with blankets and pillows and curled up. Of course then another flight attendant comes over and tells me I can't do that in case we hit turbulence, blah blah blah. I looked at him and was about to cry. I told him the situation and he was kind, and said he'd see if he could get someone in the back w/ extra seats to switch. I didn't think he could because if I had three seats to lay down on I wouldn't switch either to a bulkhead. He came back to collect the rubbish from everyone and said he was still working on it. Fair enough - I held out as much as possible. Then he ran up to the front, leaving his cart just sitting there, and came back a few mins later saying he'd sorted out something and would be back when he was done. Miracle of miracles, he had told the first class purser my situation and that I didn't need any extra attention, just a place to lay down and the bloke had agreed. Thank G-d! This very nice man took me up front, showed me how to recline the seat into a bed and for the remaining few hours I was able to lie on my stomach. I would not have made it otherwise, that's for sure.
The first few days in London were a little rough but I managed okay. By the end of the week I think the cut was healed up for the most part. The flight back wasn't bad for the bum at least. The rest of me was not happy and I am so so glad I now order the wheelchair assistance because there is no way I would have been able to walk off that plane and through the terminal. My whole body was in pain from the pressure on the flight, plus all the walking I had done during my visit.
So now I'm back and have the colonoscopy scheduled in a few weeks. Yesterday I caved and rang my hand/wrist doctor because my right hand has been getting worse and worse and the last week with the camera threw it into pain overdrive. I believe it was over a year ago that I saw Dr. Melone and he gave me an injection. He said if it didn't work I'd need surgery. It lasted maybe a month or so and then, well, I had the whole ER and one surgery after another to deal with on the opposite end, so ignored it as much as possible. Lately though I've taken to rubbing my wrist in with lidocaine cream which seems to be the only way to get through the day. I am still wearing the splint at night, mostly, and it's not doing much of anything. Therefore, I caved and made an appointment to go see him. Trust me, I really don't want to. I don't even have many days off left for this crap, but I don't know if I can wait with the pain for another 7 months to have it sorted. I will hear what he says about the surgery and if it is a quick recovery or not and then will make a decision.
Also because of all that's been going on I've been quite remiss on my PT and the neck and jaw are acting up quite a lot. Started doing some PT last night and will be going to see the acupuncturist this week as well. Praying for some pain relief.
Like I always say, never a dull moment.

Weekend and 38 wk post-op update
I suppose it would help if I remembered to take those bloody Mobic pills! Last night I was lying in bed, wondering why my hips hurt so much. Yes I over did it this weekend, but they were really achy. Then I realised I hadn't taken a pill all weekend, possibly even including Friday. Oops. What's that saying, G-d helps those that help themselves? I have been pretty good except for the last few days, and yes I just took one now after my brecky.
My lovely wound had been behaving for a couple of days and then yesterday I woke up and it was bleeding a lot. I won't gross you out, but it was a gross day dealing with it. Even so I took my lazy bum to the pool. I figured I would do a test run to see if I would be able to do this after surgery, since the doctor said it should be okay. It felt great to exercise and be back in the pool - it's been 4 weeks and I definitely need to keep up my muscles in my legs. I don't want any backsliding with my hip "progress". I did a little over half an hour, then got kicked out because there was some kiddie party.
My right hand/wrist has been a wreck lately, but did sleep with the splint last night so hopefully it will make some sort of difference for the better. I really can't possibly think about hand surgery right now with everything else going on! 11 days till surgery. Ugh.

Achy
It ended up raining last night. We kept changing our mind to go on the ghost walk, and eventually decided to do so. That was a mistake. Even though we booked and gave them our info, when we arrived at the hotel for the start, no one was there. We rang them and they said they thought we meant for tomorrow night - buggers! Anyway, it really started to rain then so it probably worked out for the best.
My left wrist was killing me last night - it hurt so much that I wrapped it up in a lidocaine patch. I think it was from holding my Hasselblad. I will try to be more careful today. The sun has come out for the time being and I'm just waiting for my friend to get back so we can go to Ybor City. It's meant to rain later in the afternoon - not looking forward to that. I also put a lido patch on my right hip last night before we left. Today we have a twist though because the left one is unhappy. Oh well, if it still hurts when we're leaving I'll toss on a patch there! Shame I didn't bring more!
Other than all the achy bits, I'm having a great time.

if it's not one thing...
well, it's actually many. I've changed the quote.
Saturday I was feeling okay, weather was a bit hit or miss, and I took it easy. I had decided I would go to the pool on Sunday as it seems slightly less insane than on Saturdays. I also had plans to go out with some friends to Uncle Nicks - a must - for the flaming cheese! It was great! We ordered a bunch of starters and some wine and watched lots of flaming cheese! After we went next door to a bar that makes pretty damn strong drinks. This is a dangerous thing, but a fun one too! I'll just leave it at that. It was a great distraction from my pain though, as I barely knew what was bothering me! Gotta love that!
Sunday I went to the pool and had a good workout, pushed it a bit. After some lunch I went to sit in Central Park for a while, it was so beautiful out. My favourite weather, not too hot, not too cool - just right! I was feeling pretty good but still took the bus from my flat to the park, but I did end up walking home. I've been a bit sore since (yes even remembering to take my Mobic) so think I might have overdone it a bit. But still, I feel like I have to make some progress and not just do the same things all the time.
Monday was a pretty good day, weather lovely and I was even able to stand for a bit when I met my friend Stan out for drinks. I was still v. happy when the girl next to me finally left so I could nick her bar stool. :-) Yesterday did the pool again and hips were definitely not happy after, so I made sure to ice them both when I got home. I have to say that my back is still tight and my neck feels like there's a pinched nerve in there. I am thinking it's related to the arm exercises I've been doing in the pool. Tomorrow at my massage/chiro I will ask him to address that area.
Don't even get me started on my hand/wrist. It was hurting so much last night I put a lido patch on under my splint. Thankfully that worked so I didn't have the pain all night, but now it's back to hurting, plus I'm having shooting pains up and down the arm. Such fun. Have I mentioned how much I DO NOT want to have another hand surgery?
Anyway, for the most part, I've been good. I've slept well the last two nights (with assistance) but who cares, it feels great to sleep through the night! And I am off on holiday in two weeks so all is good!

Post - weekend update
Today I feel horrid. The weather is horrid. Today is the first day in a while that I am slightly gimpy with the right hip. I shouldn't really be complaining though. I didn't sleep last night, and I also realised that I had forgotten to take the Mobic on Saturday and Sunday. Oops. Friday night I was out, and didn't get to sleep till late, and same as Saturday. Why is it no matter how exhausted I am I just can't sleep? Drives me nuts.
I walked quite a bit on Saturday, trying to see how I would do. I thought I did pretty well for the amount of walking I did. I pushed myself at the pool yesterday. Have been trying to walk faster and also added arm exercises. My back and shoulders are so sore today. I don't mind being a bit sore, just wish my whole body didn't ache so much today. Sadly I don't think there is one part of me that doesn't hurt. Oh well, tomorrow is another day.
I had totally forgotten I had an appointment with the rheumatologist today. Thankfully I looked in my calendar and saw it. I hope she doesn't get mad that I am still only taking one Mobic per day. I just don't see the reason to take two as one is destroying my stomach, and I've been taking two acid-reflux pills a day to try to help. I also hope she doesn't examine me physically, because if someone touched me right now I might have to kill them. Ok, maybe not kill - permanently maim perhaps?
I am going to the NYPL tonight for another function. A friend invited me to some readings that are to be done by Ethan Hawke and others. I'm not a huge EH fan, but he was decent in "The Coast of Utopia" last year. Should be good though I hope I'm feeling better before that. Perhaps I can get a nap squeezed in somehow.
My right hand/wrist is a mess - even with wearing this bloody splint every night. I am dreading the thought of surgery - I know I've probably said this before - but will put it off as long as possible. I'm so over the medical profession.
I sent an email to the PT people today to see if they a) did ever get the letter off, b) if the insurance co actually received it this time and c) if there was anything else they suggest doing in the pool. Hopefully I will hear back with some (touch wood) good news.

Working it
I went to the pool yesterday and had it all to myself! So nice. I did a longer than normal workout, which I think is easier because this pool is heated to a nice temperature. Warm water is definitely better for my body with all of it's "issues". I also incorporated some arm exercises as well, and I am sure feeling that today - especially my under arms and shoulder area. I will try to keep it up though as I definitely need to start working them as well. I've added more reps to my leg lifts and a little bit longer to each of the walking directions. I haven't done the leg press or the bike again this week, bad me! I will try next week, things were a bit hectic again.
I did ice my hips when I got home last night, but that didn't seem to matter to the left. It was okay initially but later on started to hurt a lot again. Just when you are thinking it's better because you're not compensating as much with it - bam! Oh well. What can you do? I will have to just be careful but keep up the exercise with it as well, as I have been doing.
Hand/wrist also has not been happy the last few days. I'm dreading the surgery so will pretend it is fine for now.
Will be going to the pool this weekend, working on my website and tonight taking it easy as I have a date :-) Enjoy your weekend! I'm hoping the weather people have got the forecast all wrong!

Also, forgot to add, that my wrist/hand is almost back to where it was before the injection. Soooo looking forward to another hand surgery. NOT!!!
Argh! I'm sure it doesn't help that I've been working on my website like mad either. Too much computer = unhappy hand.
But just to share something much better - here is a v. recent snap of my adorable little nephew with a friend (he's in the front) :-)

Post PT
I felt pretty good after PT last night, with the exception of my knee acting up a bit, but thankfully that didn't last too long. Today I have been good - no limping or gimping - which lead me to believe my conclusion about no balance board is correct. Doing the leg press yesterday was great though. I used to do it at the gym all the time, so it felt like a major improvement to me. Granted the weights were light, but you've got to start somewhere, and I did 3 sets of 10!
My hand/wrist has been bothering me today. We didn't really cover the idea of carpal tunnel at my last visit, so I'm hoping it's all just related to the inflammation where he injected me. And that it all goes away for good! I asked my PT people if they could get me some of the silly puddy stuff to use as Dr. Melone wants me to strengthen with it. Hopefully I will have it next week.
Also copied all of my lab tests, MRI results, surgery write-ups, etc today for the rheumatologist on Thursday. She's not going to know what hit her when I walk in!
Off to the pool again! :-)
And yes, I've remembered to take my anti-inflammatory drugs this week!
My hand/wrist has been bothering me today. We didn't really cover the idea of carpal tunnel at my last visit, so I'm hoping it's all just related to the inflammation where he injected me. weekend update
I've been busy playing with a new toy. How I love new toys. This one is a biggie though. Just getting it out of the box almost destroyed me. I can't believe how heavy they make these Macs! Anyway, with some difficulty I did get it out of the box and set up. I've even sussed out how to transfer items from my PC using that as a server. I amaze myself sometimes as I'm not too tech savvy. So I've been spending much time trying to learn the Mac way - and I have to admit there are certain things that drive me a bit wonky. A lot of programs don't work with it. Ah well, it's purpose is for my photography so that is what I will use it primarily for anyway. Still, takes some getting used to. I've been trying to not spend to much time at one time on it as I don't want my hand to start up. It's been pretty good since the injection on Wednesday and I don't want to irritate it.
Yesterday I took a break in the afternoon for some wine and cheese at Uva. I love that place. It's so reasonable and you can sit for hours just talking and hanging out and they're cool about it. It was a self-imposed, pre-planned break from the computer. I didn't want to lock myself up for the whole weekend just playing with it.
I decided to start spring cleaning today. I thought I had been feeling well but after I got started my hips decided they didn't like the plan. I do still want to go to the pool but need to get motivated now that I'm in pain. Still, I must go and strengthen. I'll ice twice as much after! Besides if I don't leave for a break I'll keep at the cleaning and really destroy me for the rest of the weekend. I still have to do laundry as well, but the more I think about it, the more I think that will be tomorrows chore. Moderation is key to my life - that's what the keep telling me anyway. And I have to remember to get all those test results for the rheumy appointment this week. And tomorrow night going to see a singer in the village which will be a nice treat. Don't nearly get down there enough!
Ok, must give myself a swift kick in the arse and get going! It's hard to leave though as my brother told me about this cool website, pandora.com. You put in your favourite band and they come up with a stream of songs. It's pretty amazing that 95% of the songs they are playing I like, then again not too surprising as it's all 80's and I'm so trapped in that time period. Still, lots of stuff I haven't heard in a while like OMD, TFF, Psychedelic Furs, etc. V. v. cool!

Day after the (wrist) injection
Day one seems to be going pretty well with the hand pain barely there. Quite a relief, though I won't get my hopes up too high as these things tend to wear off at some point. But I am hoping it doesn't wear off. My wrist was so sore yesterday that I even iced it after the pool. When I woke up this morning it was much better though, even with sleeping with the splint on.
The pool went pretty well, though I was definitely sore afterwards. I iced both hips for a while when I got home, and that helps. I am still a bit sore today but not bad at all. My pool 'workout' consists of about 5 minutes walking forward, 5 backwards, then 5 sideways. After that I do the leg lifts to the side, back and the bending knee one. I did add the squats again per S's instruction at PT on Monday, but I am wondering if that was why I was more sore after than I have been. I made sure not to go down too far and to keep my legs in the position he told me to. Unfortunately the gym near me has the pool closed tomorrow, so I will either go down to 34th or I will go on Saturday and Sunday. I am thinking that is more likely as my new baby is arriving tonight - at least that's what FedEx has been saying - so I will be busy playing around with that.
Regarding the rheumatologist, her office sent a bunch of paperwork over to fill out. To be honest they could really do with fixing the forms up, the q's seem pretty general and there's a lot of stuff missing that they should ask for. I have to dig up my most recent reports this weekend so I can copy them and bring them with me next week, as requested.
