An accident waiting to happen -

That's what I am. It's incredible how accident prone I am. Sunday I was out w/ my little nephew, and to make a long story short, he was playing on a "child size" house at a farm, slipped across one of those slat type bridge things, hurt his elbow and was crying. So I ran up the "steps" - more like a plank with notches in it - to pick him up and as I did - WHACK! There went half my head into the v. low "child size" ceiling/roof. People kept asking if I was okay because it was so hard and loud. So now I'm slightly concussed. I took off from work yesterday because it hurt to just go a few feet from the bed to the loo. Still sore when I move, so trying to take it relatively easy, but still - at work you are on the computer. I'm not meant to do too much reading or watch too much telly, but I'm sort of stuck here at the office. I'm frustrated as well as I can't do any real physical activity until this swelling goes down. Nope, didn't go to a doctor. The last time I had a concussion - which was definitely worse than this one - I went to the doctors, they examined me, had me do a CT scan, and nothing showed up. I'm so over seeing doctors this year that I am just sorting myself out. There's really nothing they can do anyway. Hopefully it doesn't take as long as last time to wear off, I believe it was about 6 weeks or so.

As for the hips, they've not been happy. I thought I packed my Mobic from the office to go to the island on Friday, but it wasn't in my bag. I figured I must have left it here in the office by accident, but it's no where to be found. I hope it wasn't nicked. The hips are definitely missing the drugs and the pool. I have more Mobic at home but I can't really do much about the pool, so praying for a v. quick recovery.

weekly update

Last Saturday was lovely, I had a nice long lie in and then did nothing all day except make pancakes! I hadn't had a day like that in ages and it was just what I needed. Sunday I went to the pool and then my parents came in for a bit. The brought in this neck massage thingy I had gotten a few years ago and I've been using it to try to loosen up the knots in my neck. It seems to help a bit, though I'm still tight and also getting the pins and needles down the arm.

I went to Dr. Meng, the rheumatologist on Monday for my three month check-up. She feels I should increase the Mobic and take more Tylenol. I told her that the Mobic is irritating my stomach even with the acid-reflux meds, but she still seems to think I should do it even for a little bit. I'm very weary though. I rang up the insurance company as well to ask what I could do about getting to see the chiro again. They gave me the run around saying that I should have the chiro call to speak to their clinical one and explain the whole situation. I asked his office to do that and haven't heard back so don't know if they did. I will try again on Monday and see where to go from there.

Tuesday I went to the pool and had a good workout. Wednesday night I destroyed my body. I went to see Aimee Mann, who was fab, but it was standing room only and by the end of the night I thought my body was going to break apart into pieces, especially my hips and back. That and very little sleep left me a bit funky yesterday, so I did not go to the pool. I just had no energy so went home and relaxed - just what I needed. My left hip is still pretty miserable right now but at least the right one (touch wood) seems to be okay. And thankfully I've remembered to make the Mobic this week.

Tonight I am going to the island for the weekend. Staying at my brothers tonight and tomorrow my SIL and I will take my favourite boys to the beach, so long as the weather is good. Fingers crossed, it's not looking good at the moment.

August looks pretty laid back which is good. I will start in earnest my gym visits again next week. I just finished the required 50 for the 6 months to get reimbursed from the insurance company, and get to start the next six months on Sunday. I am going to get every cent from them especially since they won't pay for my PT or chiro now.

Happily I found out I have 13 days left to take before the end of the year. 2 are automatically put aside for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and so it's really 11. I am looking forward to going to Holland in October or November to stay with my good friend who is having a baby this month. (I am voting for the 26th even though it's a week after her due date! :-) ) After that 6 days left to figure out what to do with. Yay!

Of course I just said the right hip was being good and it's just started a lovely stabbing pain! Argh!

Still haven't heard from Dr. Kelly's office after they left that message to cancel my last appointment. Since I'm so sick of doctors I'm waiting to see how long it takes them to realise they've not seen me for a follow-up in ages. I am definitely doctored out! I so wish I had a somewhat "normal" body! I'm so over this humpty dumpty thing.

Post-op

I had my post-op for the fistulotomy today and thankfully the doctor said it looks well and is healing well. What a relief! He said he was sorry he couldn't do anything for the pain, but it's such a sensitive area that that is what happens. Great news is that he said I could go swimming. He said it might burn at first, but heck, it's already doing that, so why not? Just wanted to add a fabulous tip I picked up from some reading on the internet. After you do your sitz bath or shower, use the hair dryer on cold and low to make sure that area is dry. I started doing this the second or third say after surgery and it made the wound actually feel good by stopping the stabbing, burning pain - if only when the dryer was on, plus kept the wound dry. As we well know a moist wound doesn't heal very quickly. Wish I could remember where I got this tip so I could thank the person!)

Very excited to go see "Kicking a Dead Horse" tonight. It's the new Sam Shepard at the Public Theatre with Stephen Rea. Thankfully it's only 70 minutes long so I am hoping my bum can handle that. Going to dinner at Five Points first. Can't remember if I've been there or not, so it shall be a surprise!

My hip is still achy, but now that I can get back to doing some PT I am hoping that will help. And I am finally remembering to take the Mobic again.

Pool time

I went to the pool again yesterday. I am trying to make up for the last four weeks of not going, and then the few weeks I probably won't want to go after surgery. I am going to go again tonight. Thankfully my hips have been feeling pretty good with it. The right was acting up a bit when I was doing the sideways walking towards the end of my workout, but other than that (touch wood) it all seems good.

My right hand is not happy though, even with sleeping with the splint, but granted, it's only been a couple of days since I started that again.

Achy

It ended up raining last night. We kept changing our mind to go on the ghost walk, and eventually decided to do so. That was a mistake. Even though we booked and gave them our info, when we arrived at the hotel for the start, no one was there. We rang them and they said they thought we meant for tomorrow night - buggers! Anyway, it really started to rain then so it probably worked out for the best.

My left wrist was killing me last night - it hurt so much that I wrapped it up in a lidocaine patch. I think it was from holding my Hasselblad. I will try to be more careful today. The sun has come out for the time being and I'm just waiting for my friend to get back so we can go to Ybor City. It's meant to rain later in the afternoon - not looking forward to that. I also put a lido patch on my right hip last night before we left. Today we have a twist though because the left one is unhappy. Oh well, if it still hurts when we're leaving I'll toss on a patch there! Shame I didn't bring more!

Other than all the achy bits, I'm having a great time.

if it's not one thing...

well, it's actually many. I've changed the quote.

Saturday I was feeling okay, weather was a bit hit or miss, and I took it easy. I had decided I would go to the pool on Sunday as it seems slightly less insane than on Saturdays. I also had plans to go out with some friends to Uncle Nicks - a must - for the flaming cheese! It was great! We ordered a bunch of starters and some wine and watched lots of flaming cheese! After we went next door to a bar that makes pretty damn strong drinks. This is a dangerous thing, but a fun one too! I'll just leave it at that. It was a great distraction from my pain though, as I barely knew what was bothering me! Gotta love that!

Sunday I went to the pool and had a good workout, pushed it a bit. After some lunch I went to sit in Central Park for a while, it was so beautiful out. My favourite weather, not too hot, not too cool - just right! I was feeling pretty good but still took the bus from my flat to the park, but I did end up walking home. I've been a bit sore since (yes even remembering to take my Mobic) so think I might have overdone it a bit. But still, I feel like I have to make some progress and not just do the same things all the time.

Monday was a pretty good day, weather lovely and I was even able to stand for a bit when I met my friend Stan out for drinks. I was still v. happy when the girl next to me finally left so I could nick her bar stool. :-) Yesterday did the pool again and hips were definitely not happy after, so I made sure to ice them both when I got home. I have to say that my back is still tight and my neck feels like there's a pinched nerve in there. I am thinking it's related to the arm exercises I've been doing in the pool. Tomorrow at my massage/chiro I will ask him to address that area.

Don't even get me started on my hand/wrist. It was hurting so much last night I put a lido patch on under my splint. Thankfully that worked so I didn't have the pain all night, but now it's back to hurting, plus I'm having shooting pains up and down the arm. Such fun. Have I mentioned how much I DO NOT want to have another hand surgery?

Anyway, for the most part, I've been good. I've slept well the last two nights (with assistance) but who cares, it feels great to sleep through the night! And I am off on holiday in two weeks so all is good!

Working it

I went to the pool yesterday and had it all to myself! So nice. I did a longer than normal workout, which I think is easier because this pool is heated to a nice temperature. Warm water is definitely better for my body with all of it's "issues". I also incorporated some arm exercises as well, and I am sure feeling that today - especially my under arms and shoulder area. I will try to keep it up though as I definitely need to start working them as well. I've added more reps to my leg lifts and a little bit longer to each of the walking directions. I haven't done the leg press or the bike again this week, bad me! I will try next week, things were a bit hectic again.

I did ice my hips when I got home last night, but that didn't seem to matter to the left. It was okay initially but later on started to hurt a lot again. Just when you are thinking it's better because you're not compensating as much with it - bam! Oh well. What can you do? I will have to just be careful but keep up the exercise with it as well, as I have been doing.

Hand/wrist also has not been happy the last few days. I'm dreading the surgery so will pretend it is fine for now.

Will be going to the pool this weekend, working on my website and tonight taking it easy as I have a date :-) Enjoy your weekend! I'm hoping the weather people have got the forecast all wrong!

Exercise

is what I do. All the time. Yesterday I went to the pool. It was the lovely, heated one on 34th. It is usually calm and peaceful but there was some wackadoo who decided to do laps in a pool where you can't really do laps, and he was quite the splasher! It wasn't so much swimming as creating a jacuzzi effect. It did make it harder for me to walk which was probably a good thing, and also inhale a lot of pool water! Seriously this guy was out of control. It was almost comical, but too dangerous to laugh as you'd swallow the waves of water!

Anyway, the hips felt reasonably okay for most of it. At one point the right was not happy but thankfully it calmed down. After I went to meet a friend at Uva for some bevvies, so didn't get to ice, but still seemed okay. Today I went at lunch to do the bike and the leg press. So far so good.

Ok, back to sussing out CSS tables and such. This has been keeping me v. busy lately. Just when I think I've grasped it, there's a curve ball lined up. But I think I've got a good general idea of the basics so at least it's making more sense to me now. And it will be good to know so when I do get a program like Dreamweaver or such I will understand how to tweak what I want done. Still waiting for my scanner, but have found an alternative source so fingers crossed I will have it from there in the not-too-distant future. When I do get the site sorted I will post the address. So between this and cleaning the flat for Pesach and coming up with a menu for next weeks Seder, I will be having a v. busy weekend!

Ice is Nice

Last night I slept like a baby! It was so nice. I guess that I was really exhausted from lack of sleep plus I got some things off my mind which I'm sure helped. I actually woke up in the same position as the one I fell asleep in, a rare thing indeed.

Unfortunately I must report that my hand, even with wearing the splint every night, seems to not be doing too hot. Today it's hurting a lot by the injection site and I don't think the injection is actually working anymore. However, I'm not quite ready to call in the the surgeon yet. We will see. Also my hips are a bit wonky today. At present I am icing my right hip, and will do my left as well.

So happy I have my chiro tomorrow. I really missed it last week when he was away. Those therapeutic massages really make the world of difference to my body. Thankfully the new ortho part of my insurance company covered some visits, so I am praying they keep that up because I really don't know what I would do without them.

Progressing with my website, slowly but a little bit at a time and eventually it will get done - I hope at least! :-)

The Ups and Downs

This weekend was a bit nutty, I'd be fine, then not so much, and then fine again.
I did the rest of my chores on Sunday morning and I think that definitely irritated my hip and hand. Lifting heavy objects is not my forte anymore. I was thinking of giving my self a break and skipping the pool, but I figured if I do that once it will be too easy to keep it up, so I dragged myself there. It was a good thing, I did my laps and leg exercises and was feeling pretty good. The mistake I made was not icing when I got home. I didn't realise how much of the day had gone and I was meeting a friend downtown. Between showering and dressing and eating I didn't have time to ice before I left. Bad me! At first I thought I'd be fine, but the walk from the subway to the pub was a bit more than I'd anticipated, but still was hanging in there just fine. About half way through the show my hips really started hurting, especially in the groin/front area where the psoas is. And both were hurting, though the right was more pronounced. To add the extra special cherry on top - my right hand/wrist started hurting as well. I was a bit disappointed as it had only been 4 days since my injection. Oh well, c'est la vie. Since sleep had been lacking the last few days I decided to leave after and go home and try to get a decent nights rest. I was only slightly successful, but at least it was more than I had been getting all weekend. I'll take it! PT tonight, and will tell S that I felt good last Tuesday and hopefully he won't want me to do the balance board, I'm really convinced that is a trigger.
Looking forward to my chiro this week as well as I pulled out my neck this morning - who knew just putting a shirt on could do that!?!

Day after the (wrist) injection

Day one seems to be going pretty well with the hand pain barely there. Quite a relief, though I won't get my hopes up too high as these things tend to wear off at some point. But I am hoping it doesn't wear off. My wrist was so sore yesterday that I even iced it after the pool. When I woke up this morning it was much better though, even with sleeping with the splint on.

The pool went pretty well, though I was definitely sore afterwards. I iced both hips for a while when I got home, and that helps. I am still a bit sore today but not bad at all. My pool 'workout' consists of about 5 minutes walking forward, 5 backwards, then 5 sideways. After that I do the leg lifts to the side, back and the bending knee one. I did add the squats again per S's instruction at PT on Monday, but I am wondering if that was why I was more sore after than I have been. I made sure not to go down too far and to keep my legs in the position he told me to. Unfortunately the gym near me has the pool closed tomorrow, so I will either go down to 34th or I will go on Saturday and Sunday. I am thinking that is more likely as my new baby is arriving tonight - at least that's what FedEx has been saying - so I will be busy playing around with that.

Regarding the rheumatologist, her office sent a bunch of paperwork over to fill out. To be honest they could really do with fixing the forms up, the q's seem pretty general and there's a lot of stuff missing that they should ask for. I have to dig up my most recent reports this weekend so I can copy them and bring them with me next week, as requested.

Recovery

Last night was a bit nuts, open vodka bars are v. dangerous. But I must say that between the vodka and the lidocaine patch on my right hip I seemed to hold up relatively well. I definitely should not make a habit of wearing those almost 3" heel boots though. I am paying for it today. The front of my hips are sooo sore, as well as my right knee. I have PT tomorrow, I missed yesterday for the fundraiser do, so hopefully I will fell better. I have to admit though I feel frustrated and like I've hit a wall. I can't increase the weights because it irritates everything else, so the strength is slow in returning. Also think I've been doing too much running around and as much as I enjoy it, I must stop it as it's still too soon to do too much. At least that's how it feels.

Oh, and my tooth/jaw/whatever part of my mouth, hasn't stopped hurting since it started a couple of weeks ago, but I am loathe to go see a dentist after last time. I keep hoping it will just go away on it's own.

Even though the weather is crap and I feel like crap I am going to make a concerted effort to get to the gym after work. At least in the pool I feel somewhat normal and it's good to do some exercise finally! I'm trying to go at least two times a week, but aiming for three. It all depends on my schedule.

Getting a bit gutsy again...

Today the weather has been absolute CRAP! But thankfully to me sleeping relatively well the last week, my fibro has not been flaring up too much.

PT on Wednesday was good. We discussed that I hadn't had any sort of bad reaction to what was done on Monday, and agreed to keep it status quo for the time being. Of course then my PT guys decided to add the balance board at the last minute. I hate that thing! Well, I don't mind the front to back bit, it's the side to side that always seems to make my hips, feet, knees, etc flare-up. The area below my right knee where I have bursitis had been acting up from the morning on Wednesday so I had half a lidocaine patch on that all day. I love those things!

Yesterday was pretty good, no aggro from the PT, which is a welcome and happy thing. Tonight I have plans and since I got all dressed up decided to wear my boots. The heels are only about 2" but my right hip has not been happy with me since I arrived at work. I will try to remember to ice when I get home. If all goes well I will try to pool tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

12 weeks post op

It's never a dull moment in Tricia's world, that's for sure. I came down with a lovely cold or something last week, and it has decided it is so fond of me it doesn't want to move on. We are now trying antibiotics as a form of eviction. I hope they work.

As for my hips. The right one is good, I haven't been moving around too much since I've not been feeling well so it's hard to tell. The left hip has been touch and go and last week we didn't do any leg lifts with it. I've started to do them the last couple of days at home and so far so good. But again, I've not been walking much so it's hard to suss out exactly what triggers what pain.

The good news is that Dr. Kelly said I can get an injection into my left hip! I am going on the 21st, with the hope (and a prayer) that it will work like last time and keep me pain free for at least 3-4 weeks so I can enjoy my trip to London. I'm not looking forward to the process again as it hurt a lot last time, but I've got to try something.

Fingers crossed it works!!!
